about

“Effetto Carsico”, Young Italian Trumpet Player Mirko Cisilino’s Debut
In Search Of Unity And Simplicity
His quintet features Filippo Orefice, Beppe Scardino,
Marzio Tomada and Marco D’Orlando

Mirko Cisilino’s answer to a time of closure and suspicion is his debut as a leader: easy, simple lines that speak to everyone. This is why the Italian rising star doesn’t consider “Effetto Carsico” (out now under Auand Records) as a jazz album. «At times – he says – it reminds me of marching bands, other times rock or rhythm & blues bands».

What he wants to stay away from is tortuous, rational music. «The idea behind my work is melody, a search for unity between simplicity and complexity. Today’s society is divisive: people fear diversity. And I find that much music, mostly in the jazz area, is quite obscure. I’ve been there too, but I’m different now. I’ve felt the need to shine a light, find open hearted melodies, focus on unity and life, regardless of everyday’s complexity. It’s okay to speak about anger and pain, but there’s more than that».

Four musicians help him on his mission, and they all share common experiences in former bands: Filippo Orefice on tenor sax, Marzio Tomada on electric bass, Marco D’Orlando on drums, and sax player Beppe Scardino, who asked him to join his BS10 collective.

A solid brass section is key in this recording, finding its place between marching bands and rhythm & blues sounds, while the rhythmic section leans towards rock and pop-rock. No harmonic instrument or synth allowed: melody and bass are at the core of its dry, almost raw sound. And the arrangements are a sum of Cisilino’s experiences up to today, including his 10 years with the Abbey Town Jazz Orchestra, which he also conducted in some projects. «I’ve been trying to work with triad chords for a long time, as well as to build easy yet personal melodies. I like to start from a cell or a theme and work on that, changing the harmony: by doing this, you don’t have too much on your plate and you can develop the starting material».
